Luis has served as San Francisco Public Library’s (SFPL) City Librarian since 2005. He has guided the city through the largest capital improvement program in the history of the San Francisco Public Library, leading to the completion of twenty-two new or renovated branch libraries throughout San Francisco. Previous to his work with SFPL, Luis served as the Director of Information Services for Pasadena Public Library, the Deputy Director of the San Diego Public Library, and Associate Director of the Long Beach Public Library in California. Luis has also served as Board Chair Emeritus on the California Council for Humanities, the Steering Committee for the Digital Public Library of America and was named 2012 Librarian of the Year by Library Journal. Luis earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Master of Library Science from the University of Arizona, and a Master of Public Administration from California State University.
